It’s Never Too Early to Talk About Home Care
Your family wants to make sure your parents have the support they need as they age at home. They’re fine for now, but you want to have a care plan in place just in case. It’s actually best to talk about home care as early as you can.
Why should you plan as early as possible? It helps your parents acclimate to the idea of having help. You can start with a few hours here and there before they require daily care. Use this list of talking points to start the discussion into home care services.
Is Their Home Equipped for Aging at Home?
Talk about how equipped your parents’ home is for them as they age. There are simple modifications that don’t cost too much that can make their home safer. Grab bars in the bathroom, non-slip bathmats, and brighter LED lighting are a few examples.
Some modifications are more expensive. If your mom or dad needs a wheelchair at some point, lower counters, light switches, and wider entryways are essential. A roll-in shower or walk-in tub is also helpful.
You also have to consider if the house is suitable for aging in place. If your parents have an old Victorian with three floors, would they be able to get to their bedroom if they couldn’t walk up and down the stairs? If not, is there space to move a bedroom to the main level?
What Are Your Parents’ Goals?
What are your parents’ goals as they get older? Do they want to stay in their house? Most adults do, but some would rather move to a one-level home nearer the city. If they’re going to downsize, it’s an excellent time to address it.
Do They Have Any Health Conditions?
If your parents have common chronic conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or high cholesterol, they will have special diets to follow. Prescription medications are also likely.
Some of these chronic conditions require more frequent trips to the doctor. Transportation needs may change as they age, and if they’re not driving, someone needs to be available during the week.
What Questions Do People Have for the Home Care Expert?
Ask others in the family if they have questions about home care. Talk to your parents to see what questions they have. Draft a list of questions, and jot down your parents’ plans to age in place. You’ll want to discuss these questions and goals with a home care expert.
Talk about home care as soon as you know your parents’ goals. It’s never too early to talk to a home care agency about the range of services available in your area.
