Most likely you have seen one if not many of those colored ribbons – the looped patterned ones –around your city or town.  Nearly everyone is familiar with the pink ribbon for breast cancer.   And from cars and windows to pins and patches, there are so many varieties.  Have you wondered what they are representing?

The idea of using a ribbon for a cause isn’t near as new an idea as you might think.  The concept is noted to date back to the middle ages.  In the United States, the Army had been credited with first using ribbons in the early 1900’s.

There are ribbons for nearly any concern such as for medical issues, pet causes, a wide range of awareness topics like veterans and children, and so many others. Too, there are many ribbons which caregivers may want to use that can apply for a senior loved one’s issues and causes.  Here are some to consider:

• Lavender is for caregivers, cancer awareness
• Brown is for colon cancer
• Red is for cardiovascular disease awareness, high blood pressure, stroke awareness, heart disease; red and blue is for heart disease; red and white is oral cancer awareness and deep vein thrombosis
• Green is for depression awareness, glaucoma, kidney disease, and also for aging research awareness
• Lime green is for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Lyme disease
• Light blue supports men’s health awareness, prostate cancer, thyroid disease awareness
• Dark blue is for arthritis awareness, chronic fatigue syndrome, colon cancer, Crohn’s disease, Huntington’s Disease
• Teal blue is for Gynecological cancer (including cervical, ovarian, and uterine)
• Black is for mourning
• Purple represents Alzheimer’s disease, pancreatic cancer, fibromyalgia, lupus; purple and blue is for rheumatoid arthritis; purple, blue, and yellow is for bladder cancer
• White is for blindness awareness, bone cancer, hope and support awareness, osteoporosis, cataracts
• Pearl represents emphysema and lung cancer, multiple sclerosis
• Gold is for COPD; gold with silver is for hearing disorder awareness
• Silver represents brain cancer and tumor awareness, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease
• Yellow is for liver disease, bone cancer, bladder cancer

A few interesting facts about some of the ribbons is that, for instance, the pink ribbon for breast cancer had been designed originally in peach with Evelyn Lauder of Estee Lauder creating the pink version.  Lauder had been a cancer survivor.

Also, when you see rainbow ribbons, the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet mean life, healing, sun, nature, harmony and spirit respectively. And, there is also an orange and blue ribbon that is used to represent National Family Caregiver Month.
